Chris Sand is a purveyor of what he calls "hermit rock." These are songs that only a Montana madman in a mouse-infested single-room cabin could pen. That said, Sand loves collaborating with the wider community. In 2024, he teamed up with over 35 friends to release his 20th album, NON-JUDGMENT DAY, which received positive local press. Erika Fredrickson, of The Pulp, wrote: "[Sand's] songwriting is catchy and his lyrics are deliciously colorful, specific, impenetrable and illuminating.” Matt Savage Levenson, of Big Sky Chat House, wrote: "Chris Sand . . . has written a song that radiates the sort of empathy and musical savvy that has the power to resonate from coast to coast." Sand’s core bandmates are multi-instrumentalist, Ian Smith, and fiddler/vocalist, Grace Decker. Together they perform both young-people AND grownup songs. In 2022 they released an album of kids music called MAGIC BEANS: 16 Songs for Sprouting Children & Other Human Beans.
